Turn to O'Connor Hospital's community lecture series, a diverse menu of health and wellness classes. Offered for free, the programs cover a broad spectrum of health subjects that share a common goal: to improve and maintain the health of our community.

Ash Kickers Smoking Cessation Classes

Fertility Care Services: Ovulation Method Creighton Model
Introductory classes offered in English on the second Wednesday at 3:00 pm, the third Friday at 5:30 pm, and the last Wednesday at 5:30 pm. Offered in Spanish the last Thursday of the month at 6:30 pm; $20.00. For more information or to register, call (408) 947-2847.

Dynamics of Diabetes class

Understanding STROKE

Presented  by O’Connor and  Raul  Guisado, MD Neurologist, director, stroke program ; Wayne Dickman, RN stroke program coordinator and The Peninsula Stroke Association.

Wednesday, July 16
Learn the signs and symptoms of Stroke, and the difference between Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA), Ischemic stroke and Hemorrhagic Stroke. The key to minimizing the effects of a Stroke is to act quickly.

All classes will be held in the O’Connor Medical Office Building Auditorium, 2101 Forest Ave., San Jose (Located on the campus of O’Connor Hospital). Refreshments provided. Classes are free, but please call (408) 947-2909 to register.

"Being a Family"-Childbirth Preparation Classes

How to register for Family Center classes:

  •  Select classes and desired dates.  Classes should be completed  4 - 6 weeks before baby's due date.
  •  Download and complete registration form, writing in the desired dates for the classes.
  •  Make check payable to O'Connor Hospital for the total fees. One check is acceptable for all classes.
  •  Mail registration form and check to: O'Connor Hospital, Attn. Family Center, 2105 Forest Ave., San Jose, CA  95128
  •  Expect a confirmation letter in the mail after registration has been received and processed.
  •  Full payment confirms your place in class.  Full payment is required before the start of class. Please refer to our refund policy for class cancellations.

Childbirth Preparation Series (4 weeks)
This four week series is designed to provide the woman and her support person with information on pregnancy changes; signs and symptoms of labor; admission procedures; stages of labor and delivery; medical interventions; Cesarean births; postpartum care; car seat safety; and Lamaze Breathing and Relaxation techniques.  A tour of the Family Center is included. 
Medical Office Building Auditorium, 2101 Forest Avenue, $55/couple. 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. 2008 Tuesday series start date: July 8, Aug 5, Sep 2, Oct 7, Nov 4, Dec 2 (3 sessions only 7-10 p.m.)

Saturday Childbirth Preparation (One Day Express Class)
This class is designed for the woman and her support person who want to receive the childbirth information in one day.  The class content is the same as the four week series class.  Pastry breakfast and lunch are included.

Infant Care
This class is designed for expectant parents and other caregivers.  Basic infant care is discussed.  Bathing and diapering will be practiced on a doll.  Umbilical cord and circumcision care, feeding concerns, and coping mechanisms are discussed, as well as newborn growth and development patterns.  SIDS precautions are covered.

Infant and Child CPR
American Safety and Health Institute (A.S.H.I.) classes offering two year certification for Infant and Child CPR. Relief of foreign body airway obstruction (choking), and safety measures discussed.

Sweet Success/Perinatal Services
Sweet Success Diabetes in Pregnancy outpatient program is designed for women with gestational diabetes, helping them manage their pregnancies with this disease in order to avoid complications to themselves and their child. Clients seen by appointment only.

What is a Certified Nurse Midwife? 
Come and learn how a nurse-midwife can fit your health care needs.
Held 1st Tuesday of every month, 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.  Cost is FREE and open to women of all ages.  Partners welcome.

NATURAL EXPRESSIONS LACTATION CENTER

A full service lactation center providing breastfeeding counseling, consulting, and products to new families. R.N., Board Certified (IBCLC) Lactation Consultants available on the Mother/Baby Unit and NICU by the request of the physician, nurse, or mother. 

Prenatal Breastfeeding Class
This two hour prenatal class provides the essential information couples need to get off to a successful start with breastfeeding. The topics include the structure and function of the breast; the compelling benefits of breastfeeding for both mother and baby; position and latch technique; milk initiation and maintenance; how to tell if your baby is getting enough milk; strategies for dealing with common issues that new moms face with breastfeeding; the role of the Lactation Center and their lactation consultants; community resources for assistance after hospital discharge.

NEW!!! PRENATAL BREASTFEEDING CLASS IN VIETNAMESE
Taught by a Vietnamese staff nurse from O'Connor, this class provides the same education as the class given in English.

New Mom’s Support Group
Drop-in support group provides hands-on help and answers questions about newborn care and breastfeeding. Cost is FREE and open to all new moms. 
Third floor Mother/Baby Unit, O’Connor Hospital 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; meets every Monday except public holidays.

Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Saturdays 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to speak with a certified lactation consultant for breastfeeding questions and support.
 
Outpatient Lactation Clinic
Breastfeeding evaluation and assistance after discharge from the hospital.  Appointments required, service fee applied.  Translation provided if needed.
