During the perinatal period, women with pre-existing and gestational diabetes have special needs. The objective of the O’Connor Hospital Diabetes and Pregnancy Sweet Success Program is to meet these needs by providing a supportive and caring environment and thereby improve the pregnancy outcome for women with diabetes and their babies. The multi-disciplinary Sweet Success team includes physicians, nurses, dieticians, social workers and administrative assistants. All team members work closely with the woman and her family to ensure the goal of a healthy and safe outcome for mother and baby, and are responsible for assessing and teaching women to make lifestyle changes (diet, exercise, stress management and, as needed, medication adjustment) that result in normal glucose levels.
