The Cancer Care Center at O'Connor Hospital has an inpatient oncology unit, which was established to address the unique and complex needs of the cancer patient. Martin Rubenstein, M.D., medical director, and Pat Wolfe, RN, nursing manager, work in collaboration with numerous departments to insure the highest level of care is offered to patients admitted to the unit. The registered nursing staff of 5 West maintains their competency in the administration of cytotoxic drugs through completion of required annual classes. Twenty nurses are currently certified to give chemotherapy and two nurses maintain national oncology certification. There are 28 private rooms on the unit and six large private rooms. These large "suites" are made available to patients that are admitted for long-term care and those who are experiencing a need for family members to be close at hand. In addition to a spacious waiting room, the unit provides a quiet room that is available for families in times of special need. There is also a large room on the unit that is utilized by weekly cancer support groups.
