Turn to O’Connor Hospital’s community lecture series, a diverse menu of health and wellness classes. Offered for free, unless otherwise noted, the programs cover a broad spectrum of health subjects that share a common goal: to improve and maintain the health of our community.
Living Well Community Health Education Classes
All Classes are from 6:30 to 8 p.m. (unless noted otherwise) and are FREE.

Pregnancy and Parenting Classes
Childbirth Preparation Class Series (4 weeks)
This four week series is designed to provide the woman and her support person with information on pregnancy changes; signs and symptoms of labor; admission procedures; stages of labor and delivery; medical interventions; pain medication options including Epidural Anesthesia overview; Cesarean births; postpartum care; car seat safety; and Lamaze Breathing and Relaxation techniques. A tour of the Family Center is included. Classes meet on Tuesday evenings in the Medical Office Building Auditorium 2101 Forest Ave; $100/couple.
Saturday Childbirth Preparation (One Day Express Class)
This eight-hour class is designed for the woman and her support person who want to receive the childbirth information in one day. The class content is the same as the four-week series (see above). A tour of the Family Center and lunch are included. Medical Office Building Auditorium 2101 Forest Ave; $90/couple.
Infant Care Class
This class is designed for expectant parents and other caregivers. Basic infant care is discussed. Bathing and diapering will be practiced on a doll. Umbilical cord and circumcision care, feeding concerns, and coping mechanisms are discussed, as well as newborn growth and development patterns. SIDS precautions are covered. Sister Rosalie Weeknight and Saturday classes offered. $35/couple.
Infant & Child CPR Class
Instruction of Infant & Child CPR with two-year certification option. Relief of foreign body airway obstruction (choking) and safety measures discussed. Weeknight classes offered. $40/person or $75/couple.
Family Center Tours
Tours of the Maternity Unit are given once each week during the evening and one weekday afternoon a month. Reservations required. FREE. Call (408) 947-2699.
New Mom’s Support Group
Drop-in support group provides hands-on help and answers questions about newborn care and breastfeeding. Cost is FREE and open to all new moms. Medical Office Building Auditorium, O’Connor Hospital. 11:00 am to 12:30 pm; meets every Monday except public holidays.
Breastfeeding Class
This two hour prenatal class provides the essential information couples need to get off to a successful start with breastfeeding. The topics include the structure and function of the breast; the compelling benefits of breastfeeding for both mother and baby; position and latch technique; milk initiation and maintenance; how to tell if your baby is getting enough milk; strategies for dealing with common issues that new moms face with breastfeeding; the role of the Lactation Center and their lactation consultants; community resources for assistance after hospital discharge.
Weeknight and Saturday classes offered. $30/couple.
“Get Pumped: Strategies for Nursing Mothers Returning to Work or School”
New breastfeeding class provides moms with skills and confidence to transition back to work. The class focuses on: understanding your rights to breastfeed at work; establishing a breastfeeding routine; pumping, handling and storing your milk; maintaining your milk supply; getting your baby to take the bottle after months of breastfeeding; and discussion about breast pumps. The class meets Mondays, January 28, March 25 and May 20 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the Medical Office Building Auditorium. Cost is $20 per class. Babies are welcome.
Natural Expressions Lactation Center
A full service center providing counseling, consulting, and products. Board Certified (IBCLC) Lactation Consultants available at the request of the physician, nurse, or mother. Breast pump rental available. (408) 947-2743.

Support Groups
Alzheimer’s Caregiver Learning Circles
Learning circles are monthly workshops for caregivers that offer useful techniques and information that can be used in various situations. Topics covered include managing difficult behaviors, legal and financial issues, medication management, caregiver self-care, and many others. Fertility Care Creighton Model
Take control of your fertility without harmful chemicals. This method may be used at any stage of a woman’s reproductive life.
