O’Connor Hospital has been providing high quality health care to residents in Santa Clara Valley for more than 120 years. Volunteers have been an integral part of this long and outstanding tradition, bringing comfort and care to patients, families, and loved ones. Our volunteers have donated over 2.5 million hours of service since the program began in 1952.
Being an O’Connor Volunteer is a worthwhile way to give back to our community. Every gift you offer is cherished and valued by the many people who work for and receive care from our hospital. Our goal is to positively impact the patient/visitor experience by creating a welcoming and compassionate environment that is responsive to the needs of patients, staff and the community. As our tagline states, “It’s the Way We Care.”
If you are interested in joining our team of volunteers, we do appreciate your interest. Due to an overwhelming response from our community, we have limited opportunties for adults and our high school “Junior” program is currently closed through School Year 2012-13. If you are a high school student, you are invited to check back in February 2013 for more information. Adults who are interested are invited to attend an upcoming session listed below to learn more about our program and the process to become a volunteer:
Tuesday, August 7 4pm
Frequently Asked Questions
1) Where do O’Connor volunteers serve? Volunteer opportunities range from providing a simple hello upon the arrival of visitors, to cashiering in the gift shop, to calming anxious family members or supporting various hospital departments. Volunteers do not provide direct patient care. We do not have availability in the Pharmacy, Lab or Physical Therapy Departments at this time.
2) What are the minimum requirements to apply to be a volunteer? 15 years of age and 2.5 cumulative GPA (high school students); commitment to 100 hours of service; have a Social Security number and attend an Information Session.
3) What do I need after the Information Session to become a volunteer? You must complete paperwork, health clearance, attend an interview, and complete orientation / training.
4) What is involved in the Health Clearance process? All applicants must complete a health clearance process that includes a pre-employment background and drug screen (adults only) and immunity to most childhood diseases (all applicants). If volunteer applicants cannot confirm immunity, they must receive documentation and/or vaccines from their own health care provider.
